We fund the open source we depend on

Encrata is built on software maintained by people who were never paid for it, and used by researchers and journalists who rely on tools nobody bills them for.

Who we sponsor

Some are projects, some are the individual people behind them. All of it is money out with nothing expected back.

How we choose

We put money where a missing maintainer would hurt the most, whether that is us or the people who depend on our work.

01

We use it, or the people we serve do

Everything here sits somewhere in our work, or in the work of the journalists, researchers and security teams who use Encrata.

02

Underfunded for its reach

We look for projects carrying far more usage than their funding reflects, especially ones kept alive by a small number of people.

03

Open licence, open governance

An OSI-approved licence, a clear way to contribute, and maintainers who are still answering issues.

04

Funded the way they ask

Some maintainers want a steady monthly amount, others a one-off grant for infrastructure or an audit. We fund what they ask for.

What we never ask for

Sponsorship buys us nothing, and that is the point. If any of these ever became a condition, it would stop being a sponsorship.

Features in exchange for money

The roadmap stays with the maintainers.

Logo placement

Give us a shout-out or not, entirely your call.

Priority support

We file issues like every other user.

Exclusivity

Our funding never limits who else they work with.

Get your project funded

Maintainers can apply directly, no introduction needed. If you rely on something that deserves support, point us at it instead.

You maintain a project

Email us with the repository link, who maintains it today and how much time it takes, what funding would change, and where you accept sponsorship.
