Mailbox providers judge you by your hard-bounce rate. Cross 2% and your sender reputation drops; keep it up and even your legitimate mail lands in spam. Once a domain's reputation is burned, recovering it takes months of careful warming.

Stop bounces at both doors

Bounces come from two directions: bad addresses entering the system, and good addresses dying over time. Cover both, validate at every entry point (forms, imports, API), and re-verify long-dormant segments before big sends. The verdict's reason field tells you which failures are permanent (hard_reject, no_mail_route) versus transient (greylist_unresolved, mailbox_full), so your suppression logic can be precise.

Reputation recovers on its own

Sender reputation recovers on a lag: expect bounce rates to drop immediately, and inbox placement to improve over the following weeks as mailbox providers re-score your domain. The discipline that keeps it fixed is procedural, no address gets a production send without a validity verdict on record, no matter which team imported it.
